Naked underneath

Series of documentary videos
Dakar (SN), Lagos (NG)
2020, 2019

Naked Underneath or How to Use Clothing to Assert Oneself? invites women from different countries to walk through the city, naked beneath a Boubou — a traditional, non-gendered garment from Central and West Africa.

Collaborating with local tailors and artisans, Roxane reinterprets the Boubou for each country where the project unfolds. With its loose fit, the garment hides the body from the public eye while allowing air to move freely across the skin. The space between fabric and skin becomes the site of the work.

Before the walk, she explains the project. Afterward, they speak about how their bodies are perceived, how they move through the city, and what the city asks of them. Rather than undressing, she invites each woman to re-dress herself, to clothe her body with sensation.

Naked Underneath is a series of video works and clothing creations developed across African cities, rooted in documentary practice.
