Naked underneath or How to use clothing to assert oneself ?

Video series

"Roxane Mbanga asks women to dress in a Boubou or a Kaba without putting anything underneath. In this way, they experience a chosen nudity while walking down the street. In a way, this is a risk-taking or a danger, if we rely on the established socio-cultural conventions. {...} By dressing these women in a light garment that covers their bodies in the most conspicuous way and by allowing them not to wear underwear, the artist is in a way inviting them to (co)inhabit (with) their nudity. This is clearly a political act in the sense that it legitimizes the narratives, via their bodies, of many women who are often kept away from public discourse in a context porous to the subjugation of the second sex." Landry Mbassi, Art critic, and independent curator.
